Queen’s Day (Koninginnedag) madness in Amsterdam!

Saturday was Queen’s Day in the Netherlands. The place to be is Amsterdam, because it is one massive party. Everyone dresses up in as much orange gear as they possibly can, and takes to the streets with beer in hand (because in Europe you CAN drink in the streets! Amazing.)

Anyway, there were lots of party boats meandering along the canals. As the day grew on, a few boats became a bunch of boats, and then a bunch of boats became an entire party-filled traffic jam. It was pretty crazy.

A must-do activity is wandering through the park in Amsterdam, where much of the city comes out with their household crap for one giant flea market (or garage sale, if you’re Canadian). One person’s trash is truly another’s treasure. Lots of people had also set up little games like goldfish races, ball smashing and egg throwing. Many little kids were busking with trumpets, violins or even drum sets. We saw a lot of delicious looking homemade treats for sale as well.

All in all it was a great day. Here are some pics, of course!

Canal boat people getting excited!

Here's me in my orange gear (with all the flea market crap behind me!)

Party time!

Tons of people everywhere

Canal's getting a little busier here...

Crazy amounts of people

Party time

This is my favourite pic. Canal at maximum capacity! What a traffic jam. Not that anyone seemed to mind :P

That is insane, especially the last 3 pictures.
The concept of canals in the middle of the city fascinates me….can’t wait to see Amsterdam in person.
Did you buy anything at the flea market?
